Raen is a character in The Wheel of Time television series portrayed by Narinder Samra.

Raen is a member of the Tuatha'an. He is the husband of Ila and the grandfather of Aram.

History[]

Early life[]

Raen is one of the Tuatha'an. He married Ila, and they had a daughter. Their daughter was killed for sport by bandits when she was foraging from the wagons, and Ila strongly mourned her death, though it added to her resolve in following the Way of the Leaf. Raen and Ila also became the sole guardians of their daughter's young son, Aram, who was too young to remember his mother.[1]

Activities[]

Season 1[]

Raen's family and other Tuatha'an find Perrin Aybara and Egwene al'Vere in the Caralain Grass. Raen asks the pair if they know the Song, and Egwene is confused. Ila repeats, asking if she knows the Song. Aram jokingly says that if the pair knew the Song, or they would have answered, and instructs the pair what the appropriate response is. Egwene responds fully, and Perrin awkwardly manages to complete some of the phrase. Ila then responds that they shall still seek for the Song, and introduces herself and her family.

Raen and his companions take Perrin and Egwene to their wagons, where blankets are given to the pair. Egwene asks who the group is, and the group is confused, being certain that anyone would know of their people. Aram speaks of their ill reputation, and Raen notes that their reputation is unfairly earned. Ila explains that they are part of the Tuatha'an, the Traveling People, and that their fires are open to all, for as long as anyone needs them. The dishevelled youths begin to eat the food their hosts offer to them.[2]

Raen, Ila, and Aram head east with the rest of the Tuatha'an on the path to Tar Valon. When Perrin asks why they cannot defend themselves from the war in the south and have to pass over the Caralain Plain, Raen asks if he has seen any weapons, and Ila explains the Way of the Leaf to Perrin.[1]

Raen and the Tuatha'an travel to Tar Valon with Perrin and Egwene, where they are confronted by Whitecloaks just outside the city. Eamon Valda recognizes Egwene and Perrin and tries to take them, but Ila stands up to him. When Ila leads a non-violent show of resistance to stop the Whitecloaks, Raen stands besides her, and helps her when Valda strikes her.[3]
