Elmindreda "Min" Farshaw is a character in The Wheel of Time television series portrayed by Kae Alexander.

Min is a seer; she has the uncommon ability to get glimpses of the Pattern, which can tell her of events to come, i.e. she can see the future. This ability is known to the Aes Sedai, who keep tabs on her.[1] Min is introduced working as a bartender in Fal Dara when Moiraine Damodred comes to visit her, asking her what she can see of Rand al'Thor, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al'Vere, and Nynaeve al'Meara.[2]

History[]

Early life[]

Min was born in Andor,[1] and was present in Tar Valon during the end of the Aiel War. One day in Tar Valon, she passed a man on the street, and had her first vision; she saw snow and blood, and a baby being born on the slopes of Dragonmount.[2]

Min was raised by her aunts for her early life, and they forced her to be a carnival attraction. She eventually escaped from them, and thereafter worked in several bars and inns across Andor and the Borderlands, travelling from city to city, bar to bar, avoiding attachments and the Aes Sedai.[3][4]

Her origins are generally mysterious to many, and she has feared her abilities becoming public knowledge. Much of the general population does not know of her abilities, though the White Tower has long been aware of them. The Blue Ajah regularly keeps an eye on her, and she has known Moiraine Damodred for a long time. Her abilities also attracted the attention of Lady Amalisa Jagad when Min moved to Fal Dara.[1][2]

Season 1[]

Moiraine takes Egwene al'Vere, Nynaeve al'Meara, Rand al'Thor, and Perrin Aybara to the tavern where Min works. She has the four sit at a table while she speaks with Min at the bar. Min looks at the four and asks if they know what she is, saying it's invasive, and Moiraine tells her that they do not. Min tells Moiraine the visions she sees: Perrin with yellow eyes and blood on his chin, Rand rocking a baby, and Nynaeve and Egwene with a white flame and a gold ring. Moiraine later tells the group that Min has visions, and that's what she was asking her about.[2]

Rand goes to see Min on his own later, and he comes in after the tavern is closed. He asks her what she sees of him to confirm he's the Dragon Reborn. She won't answer unless he looks her in the eyes and tells her he wants to know. He doesn't immediately answer. She pours them drinks and tells him of her first vision when she was a child in Tar Valon, of a baby being born. Rand asks her what she sees when she looks at him, and she jokes, "Rainbows and carnivals and three beautiful women." He asks if she sees the Eye of the World, which she does, and he asks if he'll make it back, but she doesn't answer.[2]

Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve return to her bar with Loial, and she boldly offers drinks to all of them. Egwene demands to know what Min told Rand, but she replies that his secrets are not their business. Egwene then asks for reassurance that Rand will be safe, but Min says that she cannot guarantee that, and that she only knows the best and the worst things certainly happening when she has her viewings. Min then sees Nynaeve's skin burning, and sees many soldiers injured and killed as the Shadowspawn threaten to attack the city from Tarwin's Gap. When the city begins to defend itself, Min is among the foreigners permitted to flee by Lady Amalisa, leaving the city by wagon.[5]

Season 2[]

After leaving Fal Dara, Min was on a riverboat that changed course and she ended up in Tar Valon. She decided to stay in the city and was working as a bartender when she was spotted by a Red Ajah Aes Sedai.[6]

While Mat Cauthon is being held in a cell in the White Tower by Liandrin Guirale, he begins digging out the stones in his wall to escape. He eventually gets through into another cell, and meets Min, who is apparently imprisoned by Liandrin as well. She begins working with Mat to dig out stones from her side. When their opening is big enough, Min comes through to Mat's cell and brings a bottle of wine, and they drink together. Min tells him that she's being held because she glimpses the Pattern and can see the future, but Mat doesn't want to know what she sees when she looks at him. Min has a vision of Mat stabbing Rand with a ruby-hilted dagger.[6] After Liandrin releases Mat, he gets Min out as well. As they prepare to leave Tar Valon together, Min leaves Mat with the horses and secretly speaks with Liandrin, who has been manipulating Min all along.[7] Liandrin has told Min that she can get rid of Min's ability to see glimpses of the pattern. Min takes Mat to an inn and gets them separate rooms, as she plans to meet someone in the attic room. That night she's pulled into a dream vision where she meets Ishamael, and she learns that it's the Dark One who will remove her ability if she does what she's told. Min refuses, but Ishamael pushes, and tells her to take Mat to Cairhien.[4]

Relationships[]

Physical appearance[]

Min is a young woman in her mid-twenties.[8] She has fair skin, almond-shaped brown eyes, and short black hair. She has tattoos.

Viewings[]

Min can see glimpses of the Pattern that show her the future. Her ability is extremely rare, yet it is known to not be related to the One Power in any way, and the White Tower has therefore allowed her relative freedom, while keeping a close eye on her.[1] The more important something is to the Pattern, the clearer the vision.

Min's had the following viewings:

  • Perrin Aybara - He has yellow eyes and blood running down his chin.[2]
  • Rand al'Thor
    • Rand holding a baby with black hair.[2] (Possibly fulfilled with his imaginary experience of Joiya al'Thor)[5]
    • "Rainbows and carnivals and three beautiful women." She says it like a joke.[2]
    • The Eye of the World.[2]
  • Egwene al'Vere and Nynaeve al'Meara - A white flame and a ring of gold.[2]
  • Perrin, Rand, Egwene, and Nynaeve - They're all linked, which is unusual. Min sees sparks of light trying to fill the shadows, and the shadows trying to swallow the sparks.[2]
  • Moiraine - The Amyrlin Seat in full regalia, and she's going to be Moiraine's downfall.[2]
  • Tam al'Thor - Snow and blood. A baby born on the slopes of Dragonmount. The man raised the child in a wooden house besides fields of sheep near two rivers, and "that baby was something impossible."[2]
  • Nynaeve al'Meara - On the verge of burning out.[5] (Fulfilled with the imminent attack)
  • Shienaran soldiers - Death and injury (Fulfilled with the imminent attack)[5]
  • Mat Cauthon - He is stabbing Rand with the ruby-hilted dagger[9] (Fulfilled: Mat tries to stab Ishamael by launching a staff that has the dagger tied to the end of it. However, Ishamael is actually an illusion, so the end of the dagger accidentally hits Rand. Rand survives the encounter, as he is Healed by Elayne.)[10]

Changes from the book series[]

Min Farshaw is an adaptation of the character of the same name Booklink (book spoilers!) from the book series. Changes:

  • Origins - Min was born and raised in Baerlon in the books, and did not move around as much as in the television series. She was raised by her aunts, but the idea of them parading her around as a carnival attraction is original to the show.
  • Meeting locations - In the books, Min met the group earlier in the story, shortly after they left the Two Rivers in her hometown of Baerlon. In the second book, she was directly brought to the White Tower by the Aes Sedai instead of imprisoned in Tar Valon by Liandrin.
  • Rand's questions - Rand does talk to Min personally about her visions, but as their meeting is much earlier in the story, she does not confirm that Rand is the Dragon Reborn.
  • Min is shown in Season 2 "escaping" the White Tower with Mat Cauthon, then meeting secretly with Liandrin and manipulating Mat to go to Cairhien. This never happens in the books, as Min is in no way associated with Liandrin and actually was taken with Egwane, Nynaeve and Elayne to the Seanchan. Because she does not have a connection to The Power, the Seanchan have no use for her but allow her to visit the captive Egwane and hold her safety over Egwane's head in order to keep her docile.
