Lorne Balfe is a Scottish composer who composes the music for The Wheel of Time television series.

General overview[]

Balfe has composed over 150 projects including high profile films, video games, and television series. His film scores include Black Widow (2021), The Lego Batman Movie and its sequel (2017, 2022), Mission Impossible - Fallout (2018), Terminator Genisys (2015), and Megamind (2010). His video game scores include Call of Duty (2009-2020), Assassin's Creed (2011-2014), and Skylanders (2011-2016). His television scores includes His Dark Materials (2019-2020), The Crown (2017), and Genius (2017-2018), the latter of which earned him an Emmy nomination.

On September 2, 2021, showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed in an online Q&A that Balfe would be composing The Wheel of Time. Prior to Balfe joining, David Buckley was confirmed to be composing the series,[1][2] but Buckley exited the project for unknown reasons in January 2021.[3]

In an interview with The Dusty Wheel, Balfe revealed that there are about 18 musical themes for season 1. He worked closely with showrunner Rafe Judkins to come up with a distinct sound for the series, to separate it from other fantasy series, and it has a very global sound with a variety of instruments. The lyrics of the music are in the Old Tongue and narrate the scenes like an opera.[4]

On January 12, 2022, Balfe confirmed that he is returning to compose season 2.[5]

If Amazon lets this answer go through, this is me proudly announcing that we have the most incredible composer working on the show by the name of Lorne Balfe. You've gotten a tiny hint of his music with the reveal of the Logo, and what he's doing is really special.
