Helga was born on a farm in Andor to Master and Mistress Grinwell, and grew up with several siblings. She grew up with many toys, including a doll named after the legendary hero, Birgitte. She believed that Birgitte protected her when everyone was asleep.
When Thom Merrilin, Rand al'Thor, and Mat Cauthon are staying on the Grinwell farm, Mistress Grinwell sends Helga with some bread to give to Mat for his hard work. She surprises Mat, but he ends up thanking her for the bread. When Mat asks for her name, she tells him that she can't, as her mother told her to give him the bread and come straight back, though Mat points out that she hasn't followed her mother's instructions, and that his sisters never listen, either. Helga asks where his sisters are, and he tells her that they are safe at home. Helga asks if that means that they are with Mat's parents, and he remains silent, before she offers Mat her doll, Birgitte, to take back for his sisters. Mat tells Helga he can't take her doll, but she tells him that she has many more, and that her doll has "always wanted to see the world."
Helga is a young, blonde girl with fair skin.

Changes from the book series
Helga is an original character, but loosely adaptated from (book spoilers!) from the book series. Helga was originally named Else, but was later renamed. She is still referred to as "Else" in the official closed captions.
- Age - Else is a teenager, while Helga is a little girl.
- Siblings - Else is the eldest daughter of nine Grinwell children. Helga appears to be the only daughter of two siblings.
- Interaction with the boys - Else, being closer in age to the boys, was interested in Rand and flirted with him. Helga, being much younger, talks with Mat and reminds him of his sisters.
- Attack - The Grinwells are not attacked in the books.
