Cold Open[]

The Aes Sedai and Warders mourn their loss, and the last embrace of the mother welcomes the dead home.

Moiraine Damodred, Lan Mandragoran, and Nynaeve al'Meara[]

After a month of travel, the group of Aes Sedai and Warders arrive in Tar Valon with a gentled Logain in tow. Lan and Moiraine keep Nynaeve in the Warder's Quarters until the Amyrlin Seat returns from Caemlyn. Stepin mourns Kerene and his fellow Warders attempt to support him in his grief and convince him of a reason to live. Nynaeve provides Stepin Goatstongue tea as an aid for sleeping. Liandrin continues to show interest in Nynaeve. Moiraine learns of growing strife within the tower from Alanna. Stepin uses the Goatstongue tea to drug Lan, who has been keeping him company, and during the night Stepin completes suicide.

Rand al'Thor and Mat Cauthon[]

After a month of travel, the pair arrive in Tar Valon and are overwhelmed by the enormity of the grand city. Finding an Inn, the pair finally rests after their journey although Mat continues to brood. Rand meets Loial, son of Arent, son of Halan, who mistakes Rand for an Aielman. When the Aes Sedai parade a re-captured and caged Logain through the streets, Rand and Mat climb to get a clear view of the false Dragon. Loial fetches Nynaeve from the White Tower and she reunites with the two boys, though Mat has continued to grow worse. Rand reveals his belief that Mat can channel to Nynaeve, but she believes she can help him.

Perrin Aybara and Egwene al'Vere[]

After a month of travel, Perrin and Egwene approach Tar Valon with the Tinker caravan. They are stopped on the road by Whitecloaks led by Eamon Valda, who recognizes Perrin and Egwene. Though the Tuatha'an band together to peacefully block the Whitecloaks with their bodies, the pair are captured by Valda, who believes Egwene can channel. He tortures Perrin in an attempt to provoke Egwene, forcing her to choose whether she or Perrin will die. When left alone, Perrin confesses to Egwene that he killed Laila by accident. When Valda continues to torture Perrin, Egwene burns the ropes, freeing them. Something awakens insides Perrin, turning his eyes golden. The pair escape as wolves attack the camp.
