Berden Sanche is Siuan Sanche's father.
Berden Sanche lived in a small village in the Fingers of the Dragon on the outskirts of the City of Tear, where he made a living as a fisherman. He raised his daughter Siuan as a fisher girl. When she developed the ability to channel, he did not immediately send her away as stipulated by Tairen law. Instead, he encouraged her to learn to use the One Power safely, but only allowed her to do so when they were out of sight of the village.
One day, Berden went fishing with Siuan. When his knots began to grow tangled, Siuan used the One Power to fix it, and he chastised her for channeling in sight of the village, though encouraged her advancements in channeling. However, when they returned home, they saw that their house had been burned down, with a Dragon's Fang scrawled on the wreckage. Knowing that Siuan could no longer stay in Tear, Berden sent her on her way to the White Tower of Tar Valon where she would be welcome via their fishing boat. He told her not to worry about how he would cope after losing the house and the boat, telling her that she could not return unless it was ever safe in Tear for girls like her. Although Siuan was reluctant to leave, they said an emotional farewell to one another, telling Siuan that she would do great things.
Berden has brown skin, and many tattoos. His hair is short, black, and curly. He is missing his left hand.
